Born in Calcutta in 1815 to an English civil servant and his French wife, Julia Margaret Pattle studied in France and England before marrying Charles Cameron, an English jurist and member of the Council of India. The Camerons settled in Calcutta in 1838, where Julia surrounded herself with English society, entertaining, writing, and translating poetry, and reveling in Indian cultural life. |
