The Dance Lesson Edgar Degas

Edgar Degas, Dancer Seen from Behind and Three Studies of Feet, c. 1878, black chalk and pastel on blue-gray laid paper, National Gallery of Art, Washington, Gift of Myron A. Hofer in memory of his mother, Mrs. Charles Hofer 1945.6.1

A master at suggesting three dimensions through line, Degas sketched in black chalk as well as pencil. Here he experiments with the position of a dancer’s feet, highlighting the image with touches of pastel. As one scholar observed: "Degas enjoyed leaving evidence of his execution—changes, repetitions, reinforcements."
