Edgar Degas, Ballet Dancers, c. 1877, pastel and gouache over monotype, National Gallery of Art, Washington, Ailsa Mellon Bruce Collection 1970.17.27

Degas often pulled two impressions from one monotype plate, using the second as a base for pastels. In Ballet Dancers, the artist began with a monotype print of dancers set abstractly against stage decor, and then used pastel for the dancers, gouache (opaque watercolor) for the stage flat in the background, and a mixture of both media for the rocks and trees.
