The
Folding Screen
The Nabis, the most
productive western screenmakers at the end of the nineteenth century,
were inspired by Japanese art, in particular the woodblock
print and the folding screen. Bonnard, Denis, Vuillard, and another
Nabis, Armand Séguin, all made beautiful multipanel screens integrating
Japanese elements of compositionasymmetry and often a high perspectiveinto
their work. Vuillard would become known as the most innovative screenmaker
at the turn of the century.
