Winter is an unusual subject for Bearden whose landscapes tend toward a dense tropicality. Nevertheless his skill in depicting the mood of a place is here beautifully revealed. In Bearden's Mecklenburg County memories, the arrival of the hawk was among the signs of winter. An earlier Mecklenburg landscape dated to 1983 is entitled December: Time of the Marsh Hawk.
