Bearden's splendid library attests to his immense concern with world
literature. In addition, his knowledge of art history would have
introduced him to a wide variety of themes. His narrative motifs
include scenes from the Bible and from African-American history.
They also record the results of his own research for specific projects
such as mural commissions; he completed designs for more than a dozen
of them in such diverse materials as paper collage, paint on canvas,
mosaic tesserae, ceramic tile, and faceted glass.
