Manet epitomized the chic Parisian. He was every bit
the urbanite, a member of the bourgeoisie dressed in the uniform of his group:
elegantly cut clothing, gold chain in his vest, tall silk hat, and walking stick and gloves.
He was reputed to have dressed this way both in the city and the country.
